Accurate and complete data are essential to support the monitoring of commodity-driven deforestation. Milieudefensie, in collaboration with AidEnvironment, aims to address critical gaps in publicly available data on palm oil, rubber, logging concessions and palm oil mills in Liberia.
Current datasets, including those from Global Forest Watch (GFW) and the Universal Mill List (UML), are incomplete, which limits the effectiveness of monitoring corporate deforestation activities. Data about important deforestation and landgrab cases, including palm oil concession boundaries and palm oil mills are missing from these platforms.
The findings from our research will support updates to existing information on open-source platforms and enable monitoring to hold corporations and financial institutions accountable for their deforestation impact.
