Traces of Shell in Nigeria's oil spills

Research by Milieudefensie shows that Shell employees in Nigeria are complicit in the oil pollution in the country.

A business model has emerged in Nigeria around cleaning up oil spills and Shell Nigeria employees are complicit in this. Shell employees in Nigeria instruct residents of, among others, the village of Ikarama to deliberately cause leaks. They do this with the aim of making money by cleaning up the leaked oil. The money that is released for the cleaning is divided among the Shell employee, the cleaning company that often belongs to a friend or family member, the saboteur and the people who come to clean the oil spill.
