Position Paper On the Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels Conference

In the run-up to the ‘First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels (TAFF)’, various NGOs are setting out their views on the Netherlands’ role as co-organiser of this conference. This position paper also contains a number of recommendations.

The first conference on phasing out fossil fuels, organised by Colombia and the Netherlands, offers an opportunity to accelerate the energy transition. From 24 to 29 April, like-minded countries will gather in Santa Marta, Colombia, to share knowledge and discuss the action required.

Together with other organisations, Milieudefensie has set out the key priorities for the Netherlands as co-organiser of the conference.

Why this conference?

It is common knowledge: the extraction and consumption of fossil fuels are the main causes of the climate crisis. More than 80% of all CO₂ emissions result from the production and use of oil, gas and coal.  Although countries agreed at the Dubai Climate Summit to  “move away from fossil fuels in energy systems”, there is still  insufficient action, even though phasing out fossil fuels  is crucial to limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
