The downside of financial anti-money laundering and anti-terrorism regulations

Research shows that financial anti-money laundering and anti-terrorism regulations have serious consequences for climate and human rights defenders worldwide, and in the Netherlands.

Human rights researcher Floor Knoote, criminologist Dr. Annika van Baar, and Isabelle Geuskens of Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands) interviewed people in twenty countries.

Climate activists and human rights defenders are coming under pressure globally due to transfer blockades, delayed payments, and excessive scrutiny – sometimes deliberately deployed by governments.

The researchers call for a review of banking and oversight practices, so that governments and the financial sector can achieve their green ambitions.
