A Just Transition for Africa? Mapping the impacts of ECAs active in the energy sector in Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Uganda

Export Credit Agencies (ECAs) insured energy projects in Ghana, Nigeria,Togo and Uganda with a total insured value of approximately 18 billion USD in the period between January 2013 and August 2020. The largest part (52%) of this ECA support to the energy sector in Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Uganda is related to fossil fuel, specifically oil and gas. Since the Paris Agreement, only 1% of the support went to renewable energy.

Together with Both Ends and our African partners we mapped the impacts of this support on local communities, their environment and climate change. We call for end to fossil support via ECAs, and on governments to support a just transition in the global south instead.
