On January 19th, 2024, Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth - Netherlands) announces that it will go to court if ING does not align its climate policies with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. ING's head quarters receives a letter containing Milieudefensie's demands. ING has eight weeks to respond. From then on, anyone in the Netherlands can join the Climate Case against ING as a co-plaintiff. In the first week, already 9,000 people signed up as co-plaintiff.

On February 14th, 2024, ING sends a response to our notice of liability. In the letter, ING says it believes it is already doing very well on climate issues, and chooses to ignore Milieudefensie's demands. By this time, already 12,488 people have signed up as co-plaintiffs.

The appeal ruling in the Shell case offers a lot of support: the Court makes explicit that companies must reduce their emissions, and that protection from dangerous climate change is a human right. The Court also says that starting new oil and gas fields conflicts with the Paris Climate Agreement.

ING receives a letter containing our adjusted demands. We offer ING a last chance for a meeting.

ING answers Milieudefensie's letter. On February 19, Milieudefensie and ING have another meeting to discuss the demands and the letters. ING makes it clear that it will set our demands aside.
We announce that Milieudefensie will deliver the summons to ING on March 28, 2025. This is a long document with all of our arguments, the evidence and our demands for ING. This document signals the official start of the Climate Case.
Milieudefensie delivers the summons to ING, together with hundreds of co-plaintiffs in the Climate Case. The summons, together with nearly 10,000 pages of evidence, contains all our arguments and our demands for ING and the court. This moment marks the official, legal start for Milieudefensie's climate case against ING.
