The Green Livelihoods Alliance

The Green Livelihoods Alliance (GLA) is an alliance of Gaia Amazonas, IUCN NL, Milieudefensie, NTFP-EP, SDI and Tropenbos International, with WECF and FERN as technical partners.

The GLA aims to protect tropical forests and the livelihoods of people who directly depend on these forests. Milieudefensie works, together with our Friends of the Earth partner organisations in Africa, South-East Asia and South America, to govern tropical forests in a sustainable and inclusive way in order to fight climate change and human rights abuses and to safeguard local livelihoods.

Urgent and ambitious climate action and forest protection are crucial for sustaining life on earth. Currently, deforestation posts a major threat to the tropical forests. Deforestation is mainly driven by large-scale agriculture especially for palm oil and soy, by forest fires, by infrastructure development and by extractive industries such as fossil fuel extraction, mining and logging.

Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) whose lives and livelihoods are directly affected by deforestation often do not have the power to end it, nor are they in the position or equipped to claim their right to sustainably govern and manage their territories, tropical forests and natural resources.

We work to increase the participation of IPLCs in policy and decision-making regarding land rights and forest governance and strengthen lobby and advocacy to hold governments and agro-commodity, mining, energy and infrastructure industries accountable for deforestation and human rights violations.

GLA runs country programmes to protect tropical forests in Bolivia, DR-Congo, Cameroon, Colombia, Ghana, Indonesia, Liberia, Malaysia, Philippines, Uganda and Vietnam. The alliance also works at an international level with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), IPLCs and social movements.
